About
From the foundations, is a planned series of events taking place from 2025 to 2027 in recognition of artist and educator Joe Woodhouse (1971–2022) and his research and writing. Following a retrospective exhibition of his artworks, we will be hosting a series of talks, presentations, and symposiums at multiple venues. These events will explore the key themes that underpinned Joe Woodhouse’s research throughout his career.
Joe Woodhouse was widely respected in the North East as a university lecturer and, for many years, the Course Leader of the Art & Design Foundation at the University of Sunderland. He was a passionate advocate for collaborative practice and the importance of foundation courses in broadening access to art and design education for individuals from diverse backgrounds.
From the foundations events will bring together art historians, researchers, and individuals involved in contemporary projects and initiatives that have emerged over the past two decades to make art education more inclusive and accessible. By connecting those studying the historical foundations of art pedagogy with practitioners engaged in these recent developments, the programme will examine the evolving needs of students and educators in diverse contexts. These discussions will culminate in the publication of a collective work, offering practical insights and perspectives on developing more equitable and progressive models for art education.
